As we go into summer, the Green Bay Police Department is encouraging everyone to lock up your bicycles. We encourage kids to use our great parks and we want parents to remind their children to lock up their bikes at the parks and/or at home. Often times, our investigations reveal that bikes were left unlocked and unattended before they were stolen.

Frequently, officers and community service interns investigate stolen bike thefts from residents who left their bikes unattended and unlocked. Since May 6th the department has investigated seven bike theft complaints with a total of 12 bikes stolen. Aside from investigating bike thefts, officers and CSI’s respond to found bikes that have been abandoned in the city. Since April, the department has responded to 16 found bikes.

When found bikes are located, officers, CSI’s and evidence technicians try to return the bikes to their owners. However, every year, the department takes in countless amounts of bikes that cannot be returned to their owners because owners either do not know the bike serial number or the bikes do not have a license.

The attached map shows that the thefts are sporadic throughout the city. We want to remind everyone to lock up their bicycles.

The Green Bay Police Department offers free bike licenses. All residents can come to the department and ask for their bike to be registered. Registering your bike is the best way for your bike to be returned to you if it is lost or stolen.

Bikes that cannot be returned to their owners are placed in storage and auctioned off at the bike auction. This year’s bike auction is this Saturday, June 2nd from 08:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Brown County Fairgrounds. Please check our department Facebook page for more information.
