DUI collision results in serious injuries and felony arrest

On Monday, May 28th, 2018 at approximately 3:29 a.m., Santa Rosa Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Stony Point Road and Hearn Avenue regarding a two-vehicle traffic collision. Officers arrived on scene and located a black 2002 Honda Civic and a gold 2005 Toyota Prius, with both vehicles rendered inoperable due to major damage. The Honda sustained major front-end damage and it came to rest on the center median. The Toyota sustained major left side and front end damage and came to rest in the southbound lanes on Stony Point Road.

Medical and Fire Personnel had also responded to the scene. They located an injured male driver in the Honda, and an injured male driver and injured male passenger in the Toyota, all of whom had to be extricated with the jaws of life by Santa Rosa Fire Department personnel. They were all immediately transported via ambulance to a local area hospital. All had serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses on scene described seeing the Honda being driven erratically and at a high rate of speed prior to the collision. The Toyota was being driven westbound Hearn Avenue through the intersection of Stony Point Road when the Honda broadsided it as it was being driven northbound on Stony Point Road.

The driver of the Honda was identified as 36-year Santa Rosa resident, Jaime Arias-Garfias. At the hospital, officers developed information that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol. A DUI investigation was initiated and revealed that Arias-Garfias had been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. Arias-Garfias was subsequently arrested for the following charges:

23153(a) VC- DUI causing bodily injury
23153(b) VC- DUI over 0.08% BAC causing bodily injury
23154(a) VC- Operate vehicle w/ 0.01% BAC while on DUI probation
1203.2 PC- Violation of Probation
