#LASD Century Sheriff's Station Boxing Gym and WBA Boxing Champion Abner Mares, Team Up to Host a Community Night

Earlier today, Abner Mares, the WBA World Featherweight Boxing Champion and four-time world boxing champion, hosted a "Champions Made Here" program with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Century Station YAL Boxing Gym on Thursday, May 24, 2018.

Emmy award winner and newly inducted member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Jim Gray, was on hand to moderate the event with Abner Mares.  During the interview and questions posed by Jim Gray, Abner spoke to the youth and the families who came to the event about the many obstacles and adversities he faced growing up.

Jim Gray asked Abner, “Why is it important for you (Abner) to give back to these kids?"

Abner Mares responded by saying to the kids, “I am a world champion and it is a big accomplishment, but I am just a good person, I am respectful with true values. Be good to your parents, do well in school, be someone in life. It’s not about boxing, you can be whoever you want to be. I am somewhat of an example that you can make it. I am really happy to be amongst you all, amongst my friends because I call you family and I will always be here supporting you all.”

Abner Mares will fight for his fifth world title on Saturday, June 9, 2018 when he meets Leo Santa Cruz center ring at Staples Center. The fight is a rematch to their 2016 match to be televised live on SHOWTIME.

Children and teenagers who participate at the Century YAL Boxing Gym, had the opportunity to ask Abner Mares questions. After the questions, everyone in attendance got an autograph and picture taken with the champ.

LASD gives love and respect to the community. The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation programs creates a second home for youth and families in underserved communities to feel safe, to blossom, and to be inspired.

For the deputies involved with the Century YAL and Boxing Center program, their reward is simply knowing they are significantly impacting choices young people are making. They are helping the youth in building their character, their confidence and to turn away from the negative temptations in life.

Under the leadership of Sheriff Deputies at 16 Youth Academies throughout the county, LASD provides mentorship and a wide variety of after school programs for youth ages 7 to 17.
