Advisory

Three law enforcement officers injured when unlicensed driver strikes them.

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at 1:15 p.m.
INCIDENT: Traffic Collision
LOCATION: 7400 Block of Rogers Lane, Highland
SUSPECT(S): Hugo Pineda Jr., 20-year-old, Resident of Highland
INVOLVED VEHICLE: Black 2018 Nissan Sentra

SUMMARY:
Deputies were dispatched to the 7400 Block of Rogers Lane in the City of Highland regarding a shooting.  Warm Springs Elementary School was locked down as a precaution for safety since it was close to where the shooting occurred.  Deputies and investigators arrived on scene and determined one or two unknown suspects fired a gun for unknown reasons.  The suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored sports utility vehicle.  There were no victims of the shooting, and the suspects are not known at this time.

After the incident concluded, deputies and investigators were near a parked patrol vehicle preparing to leave the scene.  Hugo Pineda Jr. was driving a black 2018 Nissan Sentra north on Rogers Lane toward 11th Street.  For an unknown reason, Pineda veered into a parked car.  After impact, Pineda's vehicle flipped and struck another parked vehicle.  Both parked cars were marked San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department emergency vehicles.  Pineda's vehicle hit three law enforcement officers that were standing next to one of the emergency vehicles.  The injured were a patrol sergeant, a patrol deputy, and a district attorney's investigator supervisor.  All three law enforcement officers suffered injuries.  The patrol sergeant was airlifted from the scene.  An ambulance took the other two injured officers.  All three were taken to a local trauma center and are in stable condition. We expect all three to recover from their injuries.

The Region 1 Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the scene and is conducting the collision investigation.  Deputies Steffler and Salinas are the primary investigators for this collision. Pineda did not appear to be intoxicated or under the influence at the time of the collision.  Investigators determined Pineda did not have a driver’s license.
