Chain snatch robbery suspect in May 6 gas station incident identified and charged by Alameda County DA

On May 6, 2018, at approximately 4:35 p.m., Fremont Police Department dispatch services received a 911 call reporting a strong-armed robbery incident at a gas station in the 39000 block of Fremont Blvd. Fremont patrol officers were immediately dispatched and arrived a short time later. Upon their arrival, officers determined a female victim had been assaulted, thrown to the ground, and robbed of her gold necklace. The victim also sustained injuries to her person based on the severity of the assault.

Detectives from the Fremont Police Department’s Investigations Unit, Street Crimes Unit and Special Investigations Unit coordinated efforts to locate the suspect. On May 9, video surveillance was obtained from the business which provided detectives with a good description of the suspect and related vehicle. Based upon the surveillance video detectives identified the male suspect as 22 year old Jermaine Smith. Shortly after identifying Smith, Fremont PD detectives were informed Smith had been arrested on May 11, by the Oakland Police Department for felony evading and was in custody.

On May 18, 2018, the case was submitted to the Alameda County District Attorney for review and charging.  Jermaine Smith was charged with one felony count of PC 211 – robbery. Smith is also on two separate felony probations in Alameda County, one of which is for robbery.

“This was a terrific joint effort by members from several specialty units working together within the Fremont Police Department to identify the suspect responsible for this incident,” said Fremont Police Lieutenant Michael Tegner. “This arrest is good progress in the recent incidents our community has experienced and our detectives remain committed to investigating these crimes.”
