The Carlstadt Office of Emergency Management is warning residents to use caution this evening as the forecast is for powerful thunder storms.
 
 
The National Weather Service has issued the following warnings and watches for our area:

• A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Bergen County until 11:00p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

 
With this in mind the Office of Emergency Management would like to offer the following items to prepare for the storm:
 

• If you don’t have to go out, don’t.  At the height of the storm conditions will be difficult at best.
• If you do go out, do not drive through any puddles that you are not sure how deep they are. While it may appear safe to drive through, the puddle may be deeper than you thought and could stall your car.
• Extreme lightning is expected, do not seek shelter under trees. If caught out in the storm, seek shelter inside a building.
• Secure any loose items In your yard due to the high winds.
• In the event of downed wires, do not go near them or touch them.  Contact the police department.
• In the event of a power failure, remain calm.  Use battery powered lights.  If you must use candles, keep them away from flammable items.  In the event that you need electricity for LIFE SUSTAINING equipment, please contact the Director of Emergency Management @ 201-362-1942 or the Carlstadt Police.
•  In the event of a prolonged power outage, or evacuation due to flooding, shelters will be available to those who need them.
