Afternoon Traffic Control Study
Palos Verdes Drive West and Via Corta
May 14th through May 18th

During the week of May 14th through 18th, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department and City Engineering Division will be conducting a study to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing afternoon traffic control at the intersection of Palos Verdes Drive West (PVDW) and Via Corta.

During this week, between 3:45 and 5:15 in the afternoon, police employees will be directing traffic at the intersection consistent with how traffic is managed during the morning period.

The purpose of the study is to compare the time it takes a motorist to travel from a point in Torrance to a point in Palos Verdes Estates with and without traffic control in place at the PVDW/Via Corta intersection. Study results will not only assist in determining the effectiveness of manned traffic control at the intersection, but also will assist in determining the potential effectiveness of any future street or traffic control modifications.

For three weeks, beginning May 7th, traffic control on the PVDW upper barrel at Via Corta will be modified to right turns only all day rather than just 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Traffic cones will be placed along the centerline of the PVDW Upper Barrel west of Via Corta, forming a right-turn only lane at Via Corta to assist in directing vehicle to the south. Traffic cones will also be placed along the centerline of Via Corta between PVDW and Tejon Place to enforce the traffic pattern during the afternoons.

Changeable message signs have been placed along eastbound and westbound PVDW to alert motorists that the westbound right-turn requirement will be in place for the designated three-week period. One week prior to the start of the afternoon manual traffic control, the message will be changed to notify drivers of the presence of a morning and afternoon traffic control officer.
