Newark Recognizes National Police Week, May 13 – 19, 2018

National Police Week Honors Law Enforcement Agents.

Police officers put their life on the line every day as they work to keep our neighborhoods and communities safe. On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 61 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, more than 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts 25,000 to 40,000 survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year to honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world.
