As a man who was raised by my Grandmother and Mother,  I have great reverence for all Mothers.  My Grandmother who is now 96 years old raised me while my Mother worked to support us.  I am forever grateful to them both for all that they have done for me.

As a child, my Grandmother made Sunday service and weekly bible study mandatory not optional.  Her knowledge of the Bible exceeded those holding doctorates in divinity. “Spare the rod spoil the child” was her scripture of choice and she demonstrated on many occasions that she was a true believer.

A stickler for keeping the house in her words “spic and span”, my Grandmother was constantly sweeping our house with a broom.  I first witness her “martial arts skills” with a broom when my Uncle did something out of the way.  The speed and velocity that she used the broom to get him back in line was only rivaled by Bruce Lee using nunchucks.  Years later, I experienced the wrath of her broom when I violated the rules and became what she referred to as a “smart pants”.   As grown men, we still kept our distance when we saw Grandmother sweeping with a broom. 

“Respect and manners will take you where money cannot” was often the quote of the day.  “If you will lie you will steal, and if you will steal, you will kill” was the benchmark quote for what my Grandmother told me she would not tolerate.  I am not certain where I would be today without her.

In her honor, I want all of the Mothers and Grandmothers in Clayton County today to know that you are never alone or without protection.   As long as I am the Sheriff, anyone in this county who abuses a Mother will suffer the wrath of the entire Sheriff’s Office.   All you need to do is call us (770-477-4479) if you ever need our assistance.
