News Release: Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Collision on East Charleston Road

A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian crossing East Charleston Road last night.

On Saturday, May 5, 2018, at about 8:39 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received calls of a major injury collision that had just occurred in the 400 block of East Charleston Road. Officers, as well as personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department, responded right away. The pedestrian, a woman in her eighties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation by our Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team revealed that the woman had been attempting to cross East Charleston Road in a northbound direction. She was not in a crosswalk. A westbound red 1985 Toyota pick-up truck, driven by a Palo Alto woman in her twenties, struck the woman. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators. She was uninjured.

Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing. The driver of the Toyota was not been cited or arrested pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police are not releasing the passenger’s identity; that information can be obtained from the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
