On May 4, 2018, at 5:38PM, officers were dispatched to Safeway for a report of habitual shoplifter in the store loading an empty stroller with baby formula. Officers responded to the scene and contacted the suspect as he was beginning to leave in a vehicle. The suspect initially provided false identification to the investigating officer but was later identified as Jerry Young of Tracy, Ca. A records check of Young returned showing that he had two outstanding warrants for theft and burglary offenses.
Incident to arrest Young’s vehicle was searched and ninety-six (96) cans of baby formula valued at $4,500 were located in the vehicle. Young admitted to numerous recent thefts of baby formula from Safeway stores throughout northern California over the past three months. Young also admitted to two thefts of 40 cans of baby formula from Petaluma Safeway stores in the past week. A small amount of narcotics was also located during the search.
Young was arrested for violations of 459 PC, burglary, 529(a)(3) PC, personating another, 496(a) PC, possession of stolen property, 11350(a) H&S, possession of a narcotic, and the two warrants. Young was transported to Sonoma County Jail and booked into custody for the above violations.
