With prom season upon us the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office offers the following suggestions as a guide to make sure your prom memories are good ones and most importantly our loved ones make it home safe at the end of the night.  
 
Parents, take time to have the conversation with your teen prior to prom night.
 
Tips for Teen Drivers:

• Everyone will be excited, but if you’re driving your focus should be on the road. Limit distractions by limiting the number of people in the car and give your cell phone to a friend while you’re behind the wheel.
• Seatbelts are important even when you have on that nice tuxedo or that beautiful dress.
• If you’re driving in those new heels or fancy shoes be aware they could impact your reaction time, get stuck on a pedal or slip off because they’re so new.
• Keep in mind that although you won’t be under the influence when you’re driving home, it is important to be alert on a night when the accident rate is higher than normal.
• Know where you’re going before heading out.
• No need to text and drive. You’ll see everyone at prom when you arrive safely.
• Many teens come home late on prom night so be aware that driving while sleepy can be just as dangerous as being under the influence.
• Remember, a call to mom or dad for a ride home or calling a taxi is better than explaining how an accident happened or having to visit a friend in the hospital or something even worse.

• One way to eliminate the worry of a teen driver is to hire a limo driver, set up a ridesharing service, or drive them yourself.  
• If they’re going with someone you don’t know very well take time to meet them and their family before prom night.
• The reality is the temptation to drink or use drugs on prom night may be there. Help them plan what they will say and what to do if someone offers them alcohol or drugs.  
• It’s likely they would have text, called and Snapchatted every friend they have so their phone may be drained before they even walk out the door. Make sure their phone is fully charged before they head out.
• It’s a good idea to know where they will be and at what times. Plans often change, but let them know to contact you before making those changes.
• Decide on a curfew. You know your child best so set a curfew that is relevant to their level of responsibility.
• If there is a plan for an after-prom party, be sure it is adult-supervised.
