SMPD Arrests Local Man for Auto Burglary

A San Mateo Man was arrested early Monday morning after he was spotted breaking into a car on the 300 block of N. Grant St.

On April 30th, 2018, at around 3:30 a.m., San Mateo Police Officers responded to the area of the 300 block of N. Grant St after a resident called to report seeing a man rummaging through a family members vehicle. Our officers arrived within a minute and began searching for the man who matched the description of the suspect given to us by the resident. While searching for the suspect, an officer responded to the residence and confirmed the car was burglarized via window smash.

One of our officers spotted an intoxicated man that matched the description of the suspect and stopped him. Based on the investigation and witness statements, the man was determined to be the suspect of the auto burglary. The man, later identified as 20-year-old Daniel Mercado, was subsequently arrested for auto burglary and being drunk in public. Mercado was transported to San Mateo County Jail.

We wanted to thank the observant community member that called SMPD immediately and provided a good description and direction of travel of the suspect, which lead to the swift arrest of the burglar.
