Police activity on Business Center Drive near Green Valley Road - April 13th, 2018

On April 13th at 0801 hours, Fairfield Police Department started receiving calls from citizens regarding a man walking around with a gun in his hand. Several Officers responded and located him standing on the sidewalk near the intersection of Green Valley Road and Business Center Drive.
An officer from the California Highway Patrol was on scene as well and saw the gun in the man's hand seconds before Fairfield Police arrived.
At the time of initial contact, the man had nothing in his hands, however, was belived to still be armed. He was given commands over a police public address system, which he ignored. Based on his demeanor, officers decided to deploy several less than leathal options to take him into custody. The tactics employed in this incident were successful and he was taken into custody without being given the chance to reach for his weapon. A loaded .38 caliber revolver was located in his pocket.
Fairfield Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and treated him for injuries he sustained during the arrest. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated prior to being booked into the Solano County Jail. Based on his statements and this incident, Fairfield officers obtained an Emergency Gun Violence Restraining Order barring him from possessing firearms and ammunition. Officers then responded to the man's home and with the assistance of family members, secured an additional firearm and ammunition. The man was identified as Dale Atkins, a 79 year old Vallejo resident.
