Today, the Alameda County District Attorney charged 23 yr-old Sherrod Spurgeon with robbery and resisting arrest. The case was brought before the District Attorney that outlined the events that took place the morning of Wednesday April 11th.  

In this case, a woman was violently assaulted as she was the victim of a street robbery near the San Leandro BART station.
 
The incident occurred on W. Juana Ave. as the victim was walking with her purse on her shoulder. The suspect, 23 yr-old Sherrod Spurgeon of Oakland approached the victim and attempted to snatch the victim's purse off her shoulder. The force knocked the victim to the ground, and the suspect proceeded to kick her until the purse strap broke.
 
Several citizens witnessed the crime and called 9-1-1. The suspect fled the area on foot with the victim's purse in hand. Witnesses continued to give updated information to the police as the suspect was running.
 
Arriving Officers were able to corner the suspect in the neighborhood and eventually located him as he attempted to flee again. The suspect was taken into custody, and the victim's purse was recovered.
 
The victim sustained minor injuries from the assault/robbery and was treated at the scene. "Thanks to the quick response by citizens who called 9-1-1 and provided the location of the suspect," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "This was a real sign of a community looking out for each other in the continued fight against crime."
 
Spurgeon remains in custody at Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
