Apple Computer Scam

On Tuesday, 03-20-18 at 2:05 p.m., a 74-year old Daly City resident said received a call the day earlier from a male subject who said he was an Apple representative and was part of the “Support Department.” The subject left a voicemail and asked to return the call. The reporting party said she called the subject back, and the subject said told her that she must update her software for her Apple computer. The subject told the report that she would have to buy $500 in iTunes gift cards in order to update the computer. The reporting party told the caller she didn’t have time to purchase a gift card. The caller told the reporting party to go to her computer and search for the website, “fastsupport.com”. The reporting party complied, and the caller gave her a series of numbers. The reporting party said after she entered the numbers, the screen on her computer began to scroll multiple columns of numbers. The caller told the reporting party that this was the first step in updating her computer, and once she purchased the gift card, she had to call him back to complete the process. The reporting party became suspicious and told the subject that she would call him back. The reporting party called a legitimate Apple representative who told her this was a “scam”. The reporting party made an appointment to bring her computer into the Apple store for a diagnostic check.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
