IRS Phone Scam Alert - Thieves targeting local residents.

**IRS Phone Scam Alert - Please Share!!!**

The Internal Revenue Service is warning consumers about scammers posing as IRS representatives and claiming residents owe money to the IRS, or that certified letters were sent to taxpayer in the mail and were returned as undeliverable.

These thieves then prey on residents by calling and demanding immediate payment using pre-loaded debit cards, gift cards, or wire transfers. Consumers are told if they do not pay right away, penalties can include arrest, deportation, or suspension of a business or driver’s license.

THIS IS A SCAM! The IRS will not:

  • Call taxpayers to demand immediate payment.

  • Require you to pay your taxes a certain way.

  • Ask for your credit or debit card information over the phone.

  • Threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest you for not paying.
If you do not owe taxes, or have no reason to think that you do:
  • Do not give out any information and HANG UP IMMEDIATELY!

  • Report the scam to the IRS by calling 800-366-4484.

  • Report to the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" in the notes.
