Advisory

6:00 Tues Storm Update, Tues night icy roads; Wednesday heavy snow 9+" possible; move cars from roadways

The Monroe Township Police Department and Office of Emergency Management are monitoring updated forecasts and storm information from our emergency partners. The Department of Public Works has equipment and personnel prepared and at the ready to begin storm response.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect statewide from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning with icy conditions and heavy snow in the forecast. Precipitation, currently is a wintry mix for most locations, but will change to snow overnight, with snow expected everywhere on Wednesday.

Mixed precipitation may create slippery conditions on roads, bridges, overpasses, sidewalks, and any untreated surfaces tonight. On Wednesday, a heavy, wet snow will impact roads, trees and power lines. Snowfall rates may reach over 1” per hour at times.

PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF THE FOLLOWING:

1) Please stay off the roadways on Wednesday as the combination of ice, snow and wind will present hazardous driving conditions. Where possible, move all vehicles off of township roadways to allow curb to curb clearing. This also allows DPW to clear the roads for emergency vehicles, utilities and snow clearing equipment.

2) Heavy snow may cause downed wires and power outages. Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with.

3) If your power goes out, PLEASE REPORT THE OUTAGE TO JCP&L call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) to report the outage or click the “Report Outage” link on www.firstenergycorp.com.

4) To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run any gasoline powered engine, including generators and snowblowers, in a garage or any other enclosed space.

5) Follow Monroe Township Office of Emergency Management or The Township of Monroe on Facebook for continued updates throughout the storm.

6) Under Township ordinance, sidewalks should be clear of snow 24 hours after precipitation ceases. Do not shovel or blow snow into the roadways when shoveling your drive and walk. Snow should be placed on lawn areas.

7) Remember after a snowstorm, you may find you have already shoveled your driveway, just to have it plowed in again once the snowplow comes through. There is a way to clear your driveway and avoid the dreaded second shovel: clear an area to the right of your driveway, which would give the snow on the plow a place to go other than your driveway. That should keep you from having to do the same shoveling job twice.

8) Please assist firefighters by keeping fire hydrants clear of snow.

Stay safe and stay informed during the storm. We will post more information as it becomes available.
