South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond J. Hayducka announced the arrest of a Pennsylvania man for Eluding an Officer from an incident Wednesday evening. At 5:04pm South Brunswick Police Officer Matthew Hagood attempted to stop a motorcycle on Route 1 south which had no visible license plate. The motorcycle, which was being operated by 20 year old Anthony Bennett of Newportville, PA, began to drive at a high rate of speed through Route 1 and onto New Road. Officer Hagood stopped perusing the motorcycle at this time, as Mr. Bennett’s motorcycle speed reached over 80mph. Minutes later witnesses called Police Headquarters reporting seeing a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed near Aldrich Road and New Road. At 5:14pm Mr. Bennett continued to speed east on New Road towards Route 1, when he crashed his motorcycle into Officer Hagood’s Police car as he was pulling out of the Kendall Park Fire Department.
Mr. Bennet suffered minor injuries from the crash and was treated and released from Princeton Hospital. Investigators determined that Mr. Bennett purchased the motorcycle earlier in the day in Perth Amboy and he was operating the motorcycle while it was unregistered and uninsured. Mr. Bennett was arrested and charged with Eluding a Police Officer. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for Unclear License Plates, Reckless Driving, Improper Passing, and Driving with a Suspended License. Mr. Bennett was detained in the Middlesex County Correction Center pending his first appearance.
