Crime Alert

Attention Rutgers Community:

The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) is investigating an aggravated assault and attempted sexual assault which was reported to have occurred on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at approximately 3:55 AM in front of 89 George Street in the city of New Brunswick.

In this incident the victim, who is not affiliated with Rutgers University, reported that she was walking with a male whom she did not know in the area of Commercial Avenue and George Street. They continued to walk together until in the area of 89 George Street when the victim stated that she was not familiar with the area. The perpetrator then knocked the victim to the ground and struck her several times in the face. The perpetrator then touched the victim underneath her clothing while attempting to sexually assault her. The victim successfully defended herself and the perpetrator ran from the area, possibly towards Route 18. The victim refused medical attention.

The perpetrator is described as a white male, approximately 20 years old, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

The Rutgers Police Department asks that anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, to contact the Rutgers Police Department Detective Bureau at 848-932-8025.

The Rutgers University Police Department reminds you that you can reduce your chances of being a crime victim by taking reasonable precautions, including:

• Immediately reporting suspicious activity to local law enforcement;
• Remaining alert and aware of the people and circumstances around you;
• Avoid isolated or dark areas;
• Walking in groups when traveling during late night hours
