News Release: Police Arrest Two Juveniles Who Fled from Stolen Car on Saturday

Police arrested two juveniles over the weekend after they both fled on foot from a stolen car during a vehicle stop, prompting a short manhunt Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, March 10, 2018 at about 12:05 p.m., an officer on routine patrol initiated a vehicle stop on a green 1999 Acura TL four-door for multiple equipment violations on Maclane at Second Street. The driver and front seat passenger both immediately fled on foot. The officer chased them to the area of Ventura Avenue and Park Boulevard before losing sight of them. Officers flooded the area to search for the two suspects. Police then learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen the day before from the 4000 block of Arbol Drive in Palo Alto. A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol and a canine unit from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety assisted in the search.

During the area search, a witness told us they had spotted one of the suspects running eastbound through Barron Creek, and a second witness told us they had spotted the suspect going into a home in the 3400 block of Ramona Street. Officers also located property in the stolen vehicle that indicated one of the suspects actually lived at that same address. Police responded to that residence and arrested a 16-year-old male without incident at about 1:11 p.m. for vehicle theft (a felony), resisting / delaying an officer (a misdemeanor; for fleeing from police), and for being an unlicensed driver (a misdemeanor) after determining that he been driving the stolen car.

Officers discontinued the search for the second suspect around 1:50 p.m., but were able to identify him as part of the ensuing investigation. On Sunday, March 11, at about 10:00 a.m., officers contacted him at his residence in the 3900 block of El Camino Real and arrested him without incident for resisting / delaying an officer (a misdemeanor; for fleeing from the police). This suspect is a 15-year-old male and was a passenger in the stolen car.

Police transported the first suspect to the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall, and released the second suspect on a criminal citation to his parents. In accordance with our standard release of information procedures, no additional information on either suspect is available since they are under the age of 18. We do not release booking photographs of juveniles in such situations.
