The San Leandro Police Department along with San Leandro Police Officers’ Association is honored to host the first Law Enforcement Autism Awareness Program on the West Coast. 
 
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a severe and permanent cognitive/development disorder that impairs how an individual communicates, socializes, and interacts with others, including the reaction and interaction with law enforcement officers and first responders. Approximately 1 out of every 68 people have Autism.
 
San Leandro is home to the Regional Center of the East Bay, who currently provides service to 935 clients diagnosed with ASD.
 
Beginning April 1st and extending until April 30th, San Leandro Police employees will wear a commemorative SLPD Autism Awareness Police Patch on their uniforms. 
 
Monday, April 2nd is National Autism Awareness Day, and the San Leandro Police Department will be hosting an Autism Awareness event in the courtyard in front of the police department from 12 pm to 3 pm. Please join members of SLPD for lunch and interact with members of our community who are diagnosed with ASD.
 
These commemorative ASD Police patches will be available for sale to the general public, and all proceeds will benefit the Regional Center of the East Bay.
