Simi Valley Police Release Part-I Crimes Data

The Simi Valley Police Department has compiled the City’s Part-I Crime Statistics for 2017. Part-I Crimes, both violent and property related, as defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), included homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny theft, auto theft, and arson.
During 2017, Part-I Crimes increased in Simi Valley by 15.4% overall with 2015 reported offenses compared to 1745 reported offenses in 2016. 91% of the total Part-I crimes reported in 2017 were Property Crimes and 9% were Violent Crimes.
Burglaries decreased slightly with 331 reported in 2017 versus 334 in 2016. Arson was also down from 9 in 2016 to 7 in 2017. Two trends drove property crimes during 2017. First, the theft of personal property and tools from unlocked vehicles reflected the majority of these crimes. Secondly, auto theft and the theft of catalytic converters increased during 2017. Analysis of the data shows that the majority of these property crimes can be prevented if residents remember to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables inside the vehicle.
Violent Crimes also increased slightly in 2017. While there were no homicides reported, there was an increase in domestic violence incidents that led to 113 aggravated assaults in 2017 as opposed to 106 in 2016. There was no change in the Robberies, which were at 39 for 2017 and 2016 whereas Rapes went from 28 in 2016 to 32 in 2017.
One of the factors driving the increases continues to be the effects of Propositions 47, 57, and AB 109, all of which have contributed to larger numbers of offenders released back into our communities.
Although crime increased in 2017, it is important to remember that crime has steadily decreased over the last 20 years, even though the City’s population has increased. In 1994, for example, when the City was listed as the safest city in the nation with a population of 100,000, there were 3187 Part-I Crimes reported or a total of 64% more than there are today with a population over 130,000. Chief Livingstone is currently working with Department Staff on crime prevention and enforcement measures to help address these increases and further reduce Part-I crimes.
