Renton Junior High Threats Investigation

On Friday February 23rd, 2018 at 6:50p.m., a parent and a student came to the Huron Township Police Department to report threats to the safety of students at Renton Jr. High School. The alleged suspect is an 8th grader at Renton Jr. High.

An investigation was conducted by calling in Detectives, the School Resource Officer, along with patrol and command staff.

The student reported that during an altercation between two students inside a classroom on 02/23/18, she overheard the male suspect tell another student that he would kill him. A teacher intervened, immediately took action, and removed the student from the classroom. The student was immediately suspended from school and all school activities. The victim (student) of the alleged threat to kill was located, interviewed, and stated that he did not hear the suspect make any death threats towards him.

The reporting student also stated that sometime over the past few months, but at least a couple months ago, they heard the same student make a threat to shoot students inside the school. This threat was not reported at the time of occurrence.

The suspect was located and brought to the Huron Township Police Department, along with his parents on 02/23/18. The suspect denied making these statements and denied wanting to cause harm to other students or staff. The student and his parents were cooperative throughout the investigation.

Superintendent Donovan Rowe and Renton Junior High Principal Kurt Mrocko are aware of the incident and are investigating the incident internally as well. The student has been suspended pending their internal investigation. The Huron School District and Huron Police Department worked together throughout the evening to address this issue immediately.

We do not believe that students are in any danger at this time. We believe it is safe for all students within the Huron School District to attend as scheduled on Monday February 26th, 2018

The investigation is ongoing and will be submitted to the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
