Tomorrow, Wednesday, February 21, 2018, San Mateo Police Traffic Officers join forces with approximately twenty officers from our allied law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County for the San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.). The STEP program is a collaborative effort between our County law enforcement agencies to increase traffic safety and awareness in known hot spots throughout San Mateo County. The STEP program provides a force multiplier to our agencies to concentrate on areas of traffic safety concern in each of the participating agencies.

Tomorrow’s deployment will focus on San Mateo and Foster City from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. San Mateo and Foster City residents may notice that there are police officers from other police agencies in San Mateo County enforcing vehicle code violations in our city.

The San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association formed the STEP program to collectively focus on reducing the number of injuries and traffic accidents throughout San Mateo County. This is the second deployment in a number of planned multi-agency saturation deployments scheduled to be performed throughout San Mateo County in 2018.

Atherton PD, Belmont PD, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Colma PD, Brisbane PD, Burlingame PD, Daly City PD, East Palo Alto PD, Foster City PD, Hillsborough PD, Menlo Park PD, Pacifica PD, Redwood City PD, San Bruno PD, San Mateo PD, South San Francisco PD, and City of San Mateo County Public Communications.

SAFETY TIPS

The following safety tips can save lives and prevent traffic collisions in the city and county of San Mateo:

Drivers can:

-        Look out for pedestrians, especially in hard-to-see conditions such as at night or in bad weather.

-        Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk where pedestrians are likely to be.

-        Be cautious when backing up – pedestrians, especially young children, can move across your path.

Pedestrians can:

-        Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road, cross at crosswalks or intersections, and obey signs and signals.

-        Walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible if there is no sidewalk.

-        Pay attention to the traffic moving around you. This is not the time to be texting or talking on a cell phone.

-        Make eye contact with drivers as they approach. Never assume a driver sees you.
