Canton is asking residents to exercise caution in flooded areas.

Due to the heavy rainfall, frozen ground conditions coupled with rapidly melting snow, many of the ponds, creeks and streams in the area are at capacity. With more rain expected later today and overnight, Canton is asking residents to exercise caution in flooded areas.

Sheldon Road is currently closed between Palmer Road and Geddes Road due to flooding of the Lower Rouge River. Sheldon will only be open to local traffic until the water recedes. Motorists are advised to avoid driving onto roads that are covered with water. Even a shallow depth of fast-moving flood water produces more force than most people imagine. The most dangerous thing you can do is to try walking, swimming, or driving through such swift water. It only takes a couple feet of water to make a vehicle float. Attempting to drive through water can also stall your engine, with the potential to cause irreparable damage if you try to restart the engine. If you come upon a flooded street please take an alternate route.

Pedestrians are also advised to avoid sidewalks covered in water. Residents should stay on higher ground and avoid low spots, especially near creeks, ponds and streams.

Residents are also advised to either help assist in clearing blocked catch basins in their neighborhood, or report them to Canton’s Division of Public Works at 734/397-1011.
