Advisory

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING...

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* Flood Watch for portions of Virginia and southeast West
Virginia, including the following areas, in Virginia, Alleghany
VA, Bath, Bland, Craig, Giles, Smyth, and Tazewell. In southeast
West Virginia, Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, and Summers.

* From Saturday evening through Sunday evening.

* A series of disturbances will move through the area over the
weekend, creating moderate to heavy rainfall. The potential for
over 2 inches of rain exists across the watch area. The
heaviest rainfall is expected Saturday night through Sunday.

* Excessive rainfall, combined with an already saturated ground
and snowmelt, may lead to flooding along streams, creeks, rivers
and in low lying areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Those living along the Greenbrier River should begin taking
precautions. There is a respectable amount of snow within the
upper reaches of the Greenbrier River basin. If all of this snow
melts during the peak of this rain event, this will greatly
increase the chances for flooding. The river level at Alderson is
already half bank full from the last rain event, which means it
will not take as long to reach flood stage if heavy rain occurs.
Based on the latest forecast, if flooding occurs on the
Greenbrier River it would be in the Sunday-Monday time frame.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
