Police Chase Auto Thief Who Runs from Stolen Car

Tonight, San Leandro police officers discovered a stolen car parked in the parking lot of the Marina Square shopping center, near the FedEx-Kinkos store.  When they began to arrest the driver, he fled on foot and later, escaped capture.

At 7:20pm, an officer patrolling the parking lot at Marina Square noticed a suspicious vehicle with people sitting inside of it in a parking stall closest to Marina Blvd.  After running a computer check on the license plate, the officer learned that the car had been previously reported stolen.  As officers tried to detain the occupants to further investigate, the driver ran from officers, fleeing across Marina Blvd.

Officers, with the assistance of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office responded and searched the neighborhood for the outstanding suspect, who police describe as an African-American male, who appeared to be in his early 40s, who was approximately 6’02” tall with a thin build, wearing a maroon and black sweater and jeans.

SLPD notified residents via social media sites including Nixle and Twitter, asking those living in the residential neighborhood between Marina Blvd. to Castro St. and Pacific Ave. to Wayne Ave. to “shelter in place,” while the search for the outstanding suspect was being conducted.

After about 45 minutes, police determined that the suspect had escaped, and cancelled their search.

“Our detectives will now do what they do best – identify and arrest the outstanding suspect,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.

Police are asking that anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect in this case to call the Criminal Investigation Division at (510) 577-3230.
