Community Alert: Water Main Break at El Camino Real and Norte Dame

On Thursday, February 8, 2018 around 6:40 a.m., the San Mateo Fire Department responded to a report of a water main break in the area El Camino Real and Notre Dame Avenue.

The San Mateo Police Department is advising drivers to temporarily expect traffic delays around El Camino Real between Fifth and Ninth avenues. The California Water Service Company reports water quality has not been affected at this time.

After arriving on scene, SMFD evaluated the impact of the damage and requested SMPD to respond to assist with traffic control. SMPD arrived and immediately closed two southbound lanes of El Camino Real traffic between Fifth and Ninth avenues.  Aragon Boulevard and Notre Dame Avenue between Maple Street and El Camino Real were closed as well.  The St. Matthews Catholic Church and school were also closed.

While on scene, officials learned a 24-inch water transmission line broke at the intersection of El Camino Real and Norte Dame Avenue, causing flooding in the Baywood area. CalWater, the utility that owns and manages the pipes, arrived on scene. CalWater has shut off the water line without disrupting service to the area. CalWater reports potable water quality is not affected at this time. Those with concerns or who notice sediment in their water are advised to contact CalWater at 650-343-1808.

Residents who may have experienced damage following the brief flood should also call CalWater. Anyone with immediate concerns about electricity or gas can call 911. SMPD and SMFD have cleared the scene and CalWater will continue with traffic control until further notice.
