On February 6, 2018, at 6:58 PM, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a 911 call from the Mount Vernon Cubbard, located at 2930 Hudlow Road, in reference to an armed robbery.
The clerk reported that a white male came into the store to purchase some items and after the clerk scanned them, he told the clerk he would be right back.
After about ten minutes, the white male reentered the store and demanded the clerk open the cash register.
The male then brandished a small black gun and demanded the clerk give him the money in the drawer.
The white male took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register and left in a vehicle traveling down Hudlow Road toward Forest City.
The clerk was able to get a vehicle description and a partial license plate on the vehicle.
Deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office and officers with the Forest City Police, Spindale Police and Rutherfordton Police began looking for the suspect vehicle.
While deputies and detectives of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office were at Mount Vernon Cubbard investigating the robbery, a clerk at the Rite Aid Pharmacy in Rutherfordton called the Rutherford County Communications Center at 8:27 PM to report a suspicious person on store property.
Sergeant Watkins and Officer Jolley with the Rutherfordton Police Department, along with Sheriff Chris Francis, conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle from Rite Aid and the Mount Vernon Cubbard on Charlotte Road at 8:35 PM.
After further investigation, the driver of the vehicle, Bobby Joe Shaw II of Shelby, was detained and later charged by detectives of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office for Common Law Robbery and Misdemeanor Possession of Stolen Property.
Shaw is in the Rutherford County Detention Center under a $52,500 secured bond.
