Winter Storm Warning until 08:00PM Sunday

...WINTRY WEATHER FOR MUCH OF WESTERN TO CENTRAL NEW MEXICO THIS WEEKEND... .A vigorous upper level disturbance and attendant cold front will race east across New Mexico this evening and overnight. Rain and high terrain snow will spread into western parts of the state this evening, shifting into central areas around midnight. While many lower elevation areas will observe light snowfall amounts, the rapid onset of freezing temperatures will cause travel conditions to quickly deteriorate due to slick and icy roads. More significant snow accumulations are forecast for the higher elevation mountains, especially in northern New Mexico. Strong to severe winds will also accompany the precipitation along with frigid temperatures and bitterly cold wind chills. ...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 8 PM THIS EVENING TO 8 PM MST SUNDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy snow and blowing snow expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches, with localized amounts up to 14 inches, are expected.

* WHERE...San Juan Mountains, Northern Sangre de Cristos above 9500 feet including Red River and Southern Sangre de Cristos above 9500 feet.

* WHEN...From 8 PM this evening to 8 PM MST Sunday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 40 to 50 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Winter Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected.
