After an observant community member reviewed a Nextdoor conversation between neighbors, which included home security footage of a crime, he alerted San Mateo Police which led to the swift arrest of an auto burglar.
On Monday, January 15, 2018, an alert resident notified San Mateo Police of a conversation on Nextdoor that included home security footage of an auto burglary and suspect. Our officers were able to immediately identify the suspect as known probationer 29-year-old Nelson Diaz from the video footage. With the information at hand, our officers actively looked for Diaz and at about 9:25 p.m. located him on the 800 block of North Delaware Street.  Diaz was in possession of stolen property from two confirmed auto burglaries and additional property that was collected for observation.  Diaz was ultimately arrested for possession of stolen property, theft, drug possession and probation violation.  He was later transported and booked into San Mateo County Jail.
 
We wanted to thank our community for sharing information with each other! As a reminder, on Nextdoor we are unbale to see any conversations between neighbors as it is a Nextdoor privacy policy.  DON’T FORGET to report to your San Mateo Police any crimes, suspicious activity, and home security video that contains the either. We were able to arrest this auto burglar and link him other crimes thanks to the Nextdoor conversation between neighbors and the community member that shared it. This is a great example of our community and police teamwork to fight back against crime!
