Happy Holidays from the women and men of the Harper Woods Police Department!!!!

We would like to wish all of our NIXLE subscribers a Happy and SAFE Holiday Season. We have received over 90 responses on the request for feedback on the NIXLE service. The overwhelming majority of people want the service to continue and the prevailing thoughts are that most would rather know when a serious crime occurs or a pattern of crime develops, verses not having the information.

Harper Woods has been and continues to be a safe community to live, work, and shop in. Crime patterns have been remarkably consistent for the past twenty plus years. New technologies have allowed the rapid dissemination of information, this can be good with a service like NIXLE, or bad when rumors and misinformation about an incident get spread at lightening speed through our community.

We brought NIXLE on as an additional information service for our residents. From day one, we have stressed the importance of neighbors looking out for each other and their neighborhood. A phone call to dispatch about anything that seems out of place is the best defense against crime we have. We have 14,000 sets of eyes and ears to help us if we continue to work together to keep Harper Woods a great place.

Based on the responses we have received, we will try to put more information out about incidents that have occurred in town. Please do not rely on an announcement from NIXLE if you have questions about your safety or incidents that you would like more information on. Please DO call the station if you have questions or comments about our community.

Why are some incidents put on NIXLE and some are not? We go through a balancing process on the decision making of NIXLE alerts. Crime patterns, especially with suspect information, are put out in hopes someone will recognize the person we are looking for. Serious incidents and those drawing media attention are put out to give our residents the correct information on the incident. Hard to believe, but at times the media does not get the information correct. We have excellent relations with out local media and they do work with us to apprehend criminals and put out information to the public. We cannot control what stories are put out though. We also do not immediately put out information if it will jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation. Our whole objective is to put criminals in jail, sometimes that means we can't put out information right away that will help the bad guys.

Please feel free to contact us anytime about anything in the community that you would like to know more about. If you are not satisfied with our response, please ask to speak with the Chief or Deputy Chief, we will get back to you and assist you if we are able.

We hope you have an enjoyable and safe Holiday Season. We will be ramping NIXLE up as we begin 2010.

Thanks to all who responded, I tried but we had too many responses (which is a good thing!) to reply individually to each one. We are here to serve and protect you, your input is essential for us to be successful.
