Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 01-01-18 at 2:02 a.m., Sgt. Haralambidis observed a barefoot female subject running on Mission Street towards East Moltke Avenue. The subject, a 25-year old East Palo Alto resident, was subsequently arrested for public intoxication.

On Tuesday, 01-02-18 at 10:42 a.m., Officer Lechleitner and Officer Bocci were dispatched to a call of a subject refusing to get off of a MUNI bus at Delong Street and John Daly Boulevard. The subject had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath, had watery eyes and slurred speech. While Officer Bocci was trying to identify the subject, he retrieved a fraudulent social security card from the subject. The 40-year old transient subject was ultimately arrested for willfully obtaining personal identifying information and using it for an unlawful purpose, possessing deceptive government identification, and for falsely personating and making another liable.

On Thursday, 01-04-18 at 10:30 p.m., a shooting occurred in the area of John Glenn Circle and Warwick Street. A nearby party was breaking up and two groups of partygoers became involved in an altercation. A group in a jeep pulled up to another group getting into their vehicle to leave the area. A juvenile from the Jeep fired several rounds from a handgun at the departing group. A 19-year old male from San Bruno was struck several times and transported to San Francisco General Hospital. Our officers were in the area, heard the shots, and stopped the Jeep. Four male juveniles and one 18-year old from San Mateo were arrested for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit a crime. Firearms were also located in the vehicle. The victim is in stable condition.

On Friday, 01-05-18 at 11:51 p.m., Officer Yip and Officer Brenes were dispatched to unit block of Baldwin Avenue on a report of a verbal disturbance involving a man and a woman. The reporting party said the male was screaming at the female and was going in and out of the house. Officer Yip saw the subject and asked if he could speak with him. The officer said the suspect refused and started to run away from him. Officer Ciucci arrived and assisted in detaining the subject. Officer Ciucci said the subject was resisting and pushing him and continued to do so until he was placed in a constraint device and placed in a patrol car. The subject, a 26-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for resisting arrest, public intoxication, battery on a police officer and for a probation violation.

On Saturday, 01-06-18 at 3:09 p.m., Officer Taylor stopped a vehicle for a vehicle code violation that occurred at Abbot Avenue and Hoffman Street. There were two occupants in the vehicle, and the officer was advised the passenger was on probation. Officer Ottoboni arrived to assist. Officer Taylor advised the driver that he would be searching the passenger and asked if anything inside the vehicle belonged to the passenger. The driver told the officer the duffel bag belonged to the passenger. The passenger, a 46-year old Daly City resident, had $203 in his wallet and told the officer he just got paid. Officer Taylor’s K-9 partner Odin, a certified narcotic detection dog, went to work sniffing inside the vehicle. Odin alerted Officer Taylor to the duffel bag, and the officer found cellophane “twists” containing methamphetamine, as well as heroin inside the bag. The subject was subsequently arrested for possession of controlled substances for sale.

On Saturday, 01-06-18 at 8:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Serramonte Shopping Center parking lot near the Nordstrom Rack store on a report of an auto burglary. A witness provided a partial license plate of the suspects who committed the burglary, and Officer Murillo conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on the 3000 block of Junipero Serra Boulevard. Subsequently, a 19-year old Vallejo resident was arrested for auto burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and for committing a felony while out on bail. A 16-year old Hayward resident was arrested for conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of burglary tools and for committing an adult offense as a juvenile.

Robberies

There were two robberies during the past week.

On Tuesday, 01-02-18 at 9:40 p.m., Officer Skeehan was dispatched to a report of a robbery that occurred at Marchbanks Park. While Officer Skeehan was talking to the victim, the victim provided a description of the suspects, and other officers searched the area for them. The 20-year old victim from Daly City said he and his girlfriend were hanging out by the play structure when two teenagers approached them and one of them pulled a black semi-automatic pistol out of his pocket and pointed it at them. The victim said the suspect demanded his wallet and phone and then handed the items to the second suspect. The suspect with the gun asked for the victim’s 20-year old girlfriend’s phone. The officers who were searching for the suspects found them at the BART parking lot. The first suspect, an 18-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for robbery, possession of stolen property and for conspiracy to commit a crime and booked in jail. The second suspect, a 14-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime and was booked at the Youth Services Center.

On Thursday, 01-04-18 at 4:45 p.m., Officer Jackson and Officer Gill were dispatched to the Westlake Shopping Center near the Sterling Bank on a report of a robbery. The victim, a 56-year old Daly City resident, said he was in front of the shopping center talking on the phone when he was approached by an unknown suspect who forcibly grabbed his iPhone 10 from his hands and fled on foot. The victim tried chasing the suspect but feared for his safety and stopped his chase. The victim described the suspect as an adult Asian or Hispanic male, approximately 5’5-5’8, 150-170 lbs. and wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans. The victim contacted a bystander who used her cell phone to try to track the stolen phone via the “find my iPhone” app, and they traced the phone to San Francisco. The victim’s phone remains outstanding.

• There were 7 cases involving an involuntary psychiatric hold
• There were 6 vandalism cases reported
• There was 1 hit and run collision reported

Scams/Other

This did not occur here, but I thought it is worth mentioning as it occurred in our neighboring jurisdiction in Pacifica. The Pacifica P.D. has received calls from citizens because they were suspicious of telephone calls they received, supposedly from the Pacifica Police Department. The citizens said the callers told them they had for their arrest and that they needed to call a legal hotline with a number they provided. I am not sure what would have happened if these two callers did call this line, but Pacifica P.D. does not randomly call people to tell them they have warrants, and neither do we. If you ever question whether the caller is valid, we encourage you to call us on our non-emergency line at (650) 991-8119.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
