Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

This covers December 24-31, 2017

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 12-25-17 at 3:28 a.m., numerous officers were dispatched to a residence on the 100 block of Santa Paula Drive on the report of a subject who had been shot. The victim, a 23-year old Burlingame resident, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital. The suspect knew the victim, and six hours later, officers arrested him in Brisbane. The 23-year old San Francisco resident was booked for attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a person, residential burglary, exhibiting a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm, conspiracy to commit a crime, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, possession of ammunition by a person prohibited from possessing a firearm, and for possession of unlawful paraphernalia. This investigation is still continuing.

On Monday, 12-25-17 at 10:42 p.m., Officer Lechleitner and Officer Poti were dispatched to a residence on the unit block of Marshall Way on the report of an unwanted subject who had a felony warrant. The reporting party was the 27-year old subject’s uncle. The subject refused to come out of the residence when officers knocked. After approximately a half hour of barricading himself, the subject exited the residence. He was arrested for the outstanding warrant and for resisting and delaying arrest.

On Friday, 12-29-17 at 9:33 a.m., Officer Chittenden conducted a traffic stop for a stop sign violation near the intersection of Cypress Court and Schwerin Street. As the officer approached the vehicle, he smelled marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Officer Haas arrived to assist and also noticed the smell of marijuana. The driver told the officers, “Yeah, I’m stupid, I smoked, I’m sorry”. When Officer Chittenden asked the subject for his driver's license, he said the subject appeared extremely nervous, had rapid/stuttered speech and was moving his hand around inside the vehicle. Officer Chittenden asked the subject to exit the vehicle and asked if the subject had anything dangerous or illegal on his person. The subject stated he had a pistol and was about to reach for his jacket pocket but told the officer where it was. Officers arrested the subject, a 33-year old Daly City resident, for felony possession of a concealed firearm and for possession of a firearm in a vehicle.

On Friday, 12-29-17 at 1:20 p.m., Officer Gill was on patrol in the Serramonte Shopping Center parking lot area and saw a subject who was standing in the center of a two lane roadway yelling at passing by vehicles. Officer Gill contacted the subject and saw the subject reach into his waistline, leading him to believe he was hiding something or attempting to retrieve a weapon. Officer Castillo arrived to assist, and they asked the subject his name and date of birth. Not finding a match in the computer system, Officer Gill looked in the subject’s wallet and found a California ID card bearing another name of a subject who was on active probation from San Francisco and San Mateo County for burglary and possession of a controlled substance. The officers searched the subject’s backpack and found wire cutters and five Golden State Warriors jerseys with the tags from Dick’s Sporting Goods still attached to the jerseys. The subject admitted to taking the jerseys and asked the officer to write him a citation. The subject, a 46-year old San Francisco resident, was booked in jail for petty theft, possession of burglary tools and for providing false identity to a peace officer.

On Saturday, 12-31-17 at 10:33 a.m., Officer Mendiara and Officer Taylor were dispatched to the Jollibee restaurant on a report of a woman taking off her clothes in the restaurant. The officers arrived and found a subject matching the description who was sitting at a table, looking disheveled and moving her head and arms around erratically. The officers recognized the subject’s movements and speech pattern as being similar to those who are under the influence of a stimulant. The officers asked the subject to come outside so they could talk, and the subject wanted Officer Mendiara to keep an eye on her belongings inside the restaurant. After asking the subject a few questions, they asked the subject who the property belonged to, and the subject said it belonged to her friend. The officer asked where her friend was, and the subject said he had just left. They looked through the property and found identification belonging to the subject, as well as a glass pipe used to ingest controlled substances. The officers placed the subject, a 32-year old El Sobrante resident, for being under the influence of a controlled substance. In the booking process, they found methamphetamine in the subject’s possession. She was charged with possession of a controlled substance as well.

Robberies

There was one robbery and one attempted robbery during the past week.

On Tuesday, 12-26-17 at 9:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Mussel Rock area on a report of an armed robbery. A reporting party was parked there and saw a car pull up to another parked car and heard a male yelling out loud. The reporting party thought the people were just “messing around” but then saw a SUV pull out of the parking spot and then ram the parked car, causing it to flip over to its side. The reporting party then said a male got into the SUV, and the vehicle left the parking lot. The reporting party went over to the flipped over vehicle and contacted the 53-year old victim in the vehicle who said he was just robbed. One suspect, a 31-year old Pacifica resident, was arrested. This investigation is continuing.

On Saturday, 12-30-17 at 11:36 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Marbly Avenue and Victoria Street on a report of an attempted carjacking involving four juveniles. The reporting party, a 24-year old San Francisco resident, said he was dropping his sister back home in Daly City when he said four male subjects approached his car at the intersection. He said one subject simulated having a firearm in his waistband and told him to get out of the car. The victim’s sister yelled at him to press on the gas, and they drove away from the intersection. He provided a description of the subjects to the dispatchers, and shortly afterwards, officers found four subjects matching the description on the 100 block of Marbly Avenue. Two subjects, 16 and 17-year old Daly City residents, were arrested for attempted carjacking and conspiracy to commit a crime and were booked into the Youth Services Center. The other two subjects, both 19-year old San Francisco residents, were arrested for the same charges and booked into the San Mateo County jail in Redwood City.

Scams/Other

This did not occur here, but I thought it is worth mentioning as it occurred in our neighboring jurisdiction in Pacifica. The Pacifica P.D. has received calls from citizens because they were suspicious of telephone calls they received, supposedly from the Pacifica Police Department. The citizens said the callers told them they had for their arrest and that they needed to call a legal hotline with a number they provided. I am not sure what would have happened if these two callers did call this line, but Pacifica P.D. does not randomly call people to tell them they have warrants, and neither do we. If you ever question whether the caller is valid, we encourage you to call us on our non-emergency line at (650) 991-8119.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
