"Chinese Consulate General" Phone Fraud

The San Marino Police Department has investigated a variety of cases relating to theft by false pretenses, and our goal is to keep the community informed as new scams arise.  Recently, we were made aware of a new type of phone fraud that has occurred in the City of Monterey Park.  The caller is posing as an employee of the Chinese Consulate General and / or Chinese Beijing Police Department.  The caller tells the victim that in lieu of having them return to China for questioning, the matter can be resolved with a wire transfer of a predetermined amount of money.

Always question unsolicited calls and if you are in doubt, call the San Marino Police Department for assistance.  Do not provide these callers personal information or banking details over the phone.

Please see the attached Monterey Park News Release.
