SUMMARY: On Sunday, Janary 7, 2017, at approximately 3:11 pm, deputies from the Highland Police Department responded to a traffic collision at the intersection of 9th Street and Lankershim Avenue. Through investigation, deputies determined that Raul Bernal was traveling eastbound on 9th Street at a very high rate of speed in a silver 2013 Lexus sedan. He ran the red light at Lankershim Avenue and collided into the front end of a pick up truck. Bernal lost control of his vehicle, spun out, then struck another vehicle head on east of the intersection. All four occupants of the second vehicle were transported to a local area hospital for treatment and are expected to make a full recovery. Bernal fled the scene on foot immediately after the crash. With the assistance of witnesses and Sheriff's Aviation, Bernal was located and apprehended by Highland Deputies about a half mile away. A loaded sawed-off shotgun was found in the vehicle Bernal abandoned in the roadway along with shotgun ammo.
