Bitter cold conditions through the weekend. Senior Center available as warming center on Friday

Bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills will affect North Brunswick through the weekend.

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect until noon Saturday with wind chills ranging from 5 below zero to 20 below zero. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. Make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

Winds gusting as high as 45 miles per hour through the day today will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow with the existing snow pack.

The North Brunswick Senior Center, located at 15 Linwood Place, will be available until 4 p.m. as a warming center on Friday. The North Brunswick Library, located at 880 Hermann Road, will be available Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a warming center.

As a reminder, here are some cold weather tips. Please take extra precaution when venturing outdoors. Dress in layers with the outer layer of your clothing tightly woven and preferably wind resistant, to reduce body-heat loss caused by the wind. Keep your skin dry. Stay out of the wind when possible. Drink plenty of fluids since hydration increases the blood’s volume, which helps prevent frostbite.

Be sure to check on your elderly family members and neighbors.

Also, keep your pets warm and indoors. No matter the temperature, wind chill can threaten a pet’s life. Pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk for frostbite when outdoors during extreme cold.
