Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Operation Safe Street detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault with a firearm on a deputy and the deputy-involved shooting that ensued. 
 
On Saturday, December 31, 2017, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Compton Station deputies were conducting a traffic stop in the 8000 block of Compton Avenue, unincorporated Los Angeles. While conducting their traffic investigation, the deputies heard and saw muzzle flash and gunshots coming in their direction from an apartment complex across the street.  A lone male Hispanic was standing in the courtyard at the time of the shooting. One of the deputies withdrew his duty weapon and fired one round in the direction of the male Hispanic suspect.
 
The suspect fled the location eastbound through the apartment complex and out of view. A containment was readily coordinated and the suspect, a 23-year old male Hispanic was located a short time later approximately one block north of the location.
 
The suspect, was arrested and transported to Century Station where he was booked for “Assault with a Firearm upon the Person of a Peace Officer”.
 
The suspect’s gun, was not recovered at the scene.  
 
No deputies nor civilians were injured during the incident. 
 
The suspect’s identity is not being released at this time pending further investigation.

UNIT:  LASD Internal Affairs Bureau – Sgt.  Delgado
 

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Bureau investigators are responding to the 8000 block of Compton Avenue in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting.

There is no suspect information at this time.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

There is no additional information available at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Whenever a deputy-involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and the suspect(s) is not wounded, multiple investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as Sheriff's station or Detective Division investigators.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  The mission of the Office of Inspector General is to provide strong, independent and effective oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and to ensure transparent, accountable and constitutional policing for the County of Los Angeles.  Every aspect of a Deputy-Involved shooting is ultimately evaluated by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee, which determines whether there is any policy, tactical, supervisory, or training violations or concerns.
