Light snow event for Saturday, bitter cold until the middle of next week

A light snow event is in the forecast for the area, beginning tomorrow morning and continuing through early evening. Due to the cold temperatures in place, the dry, fluffy snow will not have a hard time sticking with likely amounts of 0.5 – 1.5 inches. Please use caution while driving tomorrow. Also watch for freeze up of any slush or wet surfaces tomorrow night.

The bigger weather story is the bitter cold conditions which will likely persist until the middle of next week. Following tomorrow’s light snow, high temperatures will range between 15 - 20 degrees for Sunday and Monday with lows around 10. Wind chills will be as low as 5 below from Sunday night through Tuesday morning. High temperatures will be in the low 20s for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please take extra precaution when venturing outdoors. Dress in layers with the outer layer of your clothing tightly woven and preferably wind resistant, to reduce body-heat loss caused by the wind. Wear a hat, as 40 percent of your body heat can be lost from your head.

Keep your skin dry. Stay out of the wind when possible. Drink plenty of fluids since hydration increases the blood’s volume, which helps prevent frostbite.

For your vehicle, check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, and heater/defroster.

Be sure to check on your elderly family members and neighbors.

Also, keep your pets warm and indoors. No matter the temperature, wind chill can threaten a pet’s life. Pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk for frostbite when outdoors during extreme cold.
