Sheriff Richard Behnke reports that on 12/19/2017 at approximately 5:56 pm, Deputies of the Cass County Sheriff’s Department were called to a crash at the intersection of M51 and Saddlebred Lane, Pokagon Township, for a two vehicle car accident. 19 year old Dowagiac resident, Leroy Lewis, was attempting to turn left into Saddlebred Lane when 58 year old Dowagiac resident, Rodney Hemminger, attempted to pass Lewis on the right of his vehicle and struck him. Lewis sustained no injuries and Hemminger was transported by PrideCare Ambulance to Lakeland St. Joseph for injuries. Hemminger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol does appear to be a factor. Lewis was wearing a seatbelt. This case remains under investigation.

Deputies on scene were assisted by Pokagon Tribal Police, PrideCare Ambulance and Dowagiac Fire Department.
