#LASD Investigating Fatal Traffic Collision, Pedestrian Killed, Suspect in Custody, 27500 blk PCH, Malibu

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Services Detail Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal traffic collision that occurred in the 27500 block of Pacific Coast Highway in the city of Malibu.

Investigators have learned that at approximately 7:50 A.M., while patrolling the east side of Zuma Beach, a Malibu/Lost Hills deputy received a stolen vehicle “hit” on his Advanced Surveillance and Protection Vehicle (ASAP).  The deputy drove eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway and located the vehicle on Pacific Coast Highway and Winding Way West in Malibu. The deputy followed the confirmed stolen vehicle on Pacific Coast Highway and Morning View Drive and initiated a pre-stop coordination as he requested backup from additional patrol units. Upon sufficient backup units arriving, a traffic stop was initiated. The driver, identified as the suspect, pulled the vehicle over to the right on Zumirez Drive and Pacific Coast Highway and a female passenger exited the vehicle.

The suspect then fled the scene in the stolen vehicle at a high rate of speed and an approximate 15-20 second pursuit ensued.  Due to the high rate of speed and the suspect’s erratic driving, the on scene field supervisor canceled the pursuit just west of Paradise Cove Road.

Moments later, as the suspect continued to drive the vehicle at a high rate of speed, the suspect lost control of the vehicle as he passed Winding Way approaching the 27500 block of Pacific Coast Highway. The suspect struck a pedestrian, killing him instantly. The suspect’s vehicle then hit three parked vehicles which led to another vehicle collision with a truck traveling eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway.  The driver of the truck was not injured.

The deputies, whom were no longer in pursuit, were still in the area when they saw smoke coming from the roadway. The deputies drove toward the smoke and saw fire emitting from the suspect’s vehicle and immediately began life saving measures, rescuing the suspect who was trapped inside the vehicle. The suspect, a 22 year-old White male who resides in the Santa Monica and Venice Beach areas, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries sustained in the collision.

The female passenger was detained and is currently cooperating with investigators.

The pedestrian killed by the suspect is a 28 year-old Hispanic male.  His identity will not be released, pending next of kin notification.
