Canyon Road Bridge Reopening Update

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Town is pleased to announce that the temporary one-lane bridge is near completion and that a ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled to reopen Canyon Road on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm. To commemorate this occasion, a procession of police and fire vehicles will be the first to cross the bridge, acknowledging the vital access needs of emergency responders at this one of only five entrance points into Town. On April 18, 2017, Canyon Road Bridge was closed when conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property arose that were caused by landslide movement resulting in damage to the bridge support structure.

Traffic Alerts

Traffic signals have been erected to control one-way traffic. The signals have been programmed and timed to accommodate commute traffic volumes and accessorized with detectors, using microwave technology, to switch traffic when no vehicles are present. Town staff will monitor traffic and make manual adjustments during the first few weeks after reopening the bridge. Please be patient during these modifications since traffic patterns are less predictable after long closures and during holidays. All motorists should drive slowly and safely on the bridge. Moraga Police will be conducting extra traffic patrols in the area.

A sidewalk structure has been attached to the side of the bridge for pedestrian access to the Lafayette/Moraga Regional Trail that runs parallel to Canyon Road to the EBMUD Valle Vista Staging Area. The diamond plate steel decking can be slippery when wet so pedestrians should use caution.

As a reminder, the California Vehicle Code contains the state laws that specify where and how bikes must be operated. For the most part, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers. Therefore, bicyclists on the roadway must queue up along with motorists at the traffic signal if they are riding in the roadway. Alternatively, bicyclists can use the pedestrian walkway as long as they dismount and walk their bicycles.

Permanent Bridge Replacement

A federally funded two-lane bridge replacement project was originally scheduled for construction in 2018. However, due to the adjacent landslide, the project requires plan modifications and is rescheduled to 2019. Please visit the project webpage for additional information.
