Man arrested with unloaded handgun.

Larkspur, CA – November 9, 2017. A San Rafael man was arrested this morning after an unloaded handgun was found in his backpack

At 8:45 a.m. Central Marin Police received a call from the Larkspur Corte Madera School District office staff on Doherty Drive in Larkspur. They reported seeing a man walking on school grounds who did not belong on the campus. They provided a description and said he was last seen heading toward Piper Park. Officers responded to the park and quickly located the subject. He identified himself as Fredy Mazariegos and said that he was in the area looking for work. He said he took a short-cut through the campus in order to use the restroom at the park. An officer searching his backpack discovered an unloaded handgun. The firearm is registered, not reported stolen, and no ammunition was located. Hall Middle School students were in class at the time Mazariegos walked through the property and there was no immediate threat to the students at any time. Mazariegos, age 28, was booked at Marin County Jail for possession of a firearm on school grounds and a traffic warrant.

This incident and Mazariegos are not related in any way to the previous threats at Redwood High School. Anyone with information about the Redwood High cases is encouraged to contact CMPA Investigations at 415.927.5150.
