Preparing for Emergencies

Both the Moraga Police Department (MPD) and the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) have received calls from residents who are concerned about fire safety and evacuation in case of fire. Please know that an order to evacuate is an extreme measure and one that is only taken to preserve life and safety. Many of us have family and friends who are in the fire area and we join you in sending prayers and good thoughts for their safety. MPD officers are part of the team of law enforcement officers who are assisting in Sonoma County and MOFD has firefighters there as well. While we are fortunate that our community is currently safe, we, and other communities in the Bay Area, are experiencing very high fire danger.

Here are some suggestions for preparing yourself and your family for an emergency:

1. Know the main exit routes from Moraga. There are four: Moraga Way, Rheem Blvd., Moraga Road and St. Mary’s Road. Talk with your family about which way you would go if you had to leave. If conditions caused us to evacuate a portion of the Town, police and fire officials would be in the neighborhoods doing everything we could to notify people and provide guidance about safe routes or other safe places to go.
2. Have a plan with your family. Have conversations with your family about what to do in case of an emergency. Ensure everyone is on the same page about how to communicate, how to call for help, where to meet if you are separated, or other safe places your kids can go if you are separated.
3. Ensure everyone has critical telephone numbers programmed in their phones. Have your kids memorize your telephone number in case they can’t access stored numbers on a device.
4. Have everyone in your family subscribe to Nixle.com. This is one way that the Town and other agencies will communicate quickly with residents. It is a free service to which you can subscribe to receive information and bulletins.
5. Be prepared to shelter in place without utilities. Have an emergency or disaster kit with plenty of water, food, first aid supplies, flashlights, etc. to support your family for an extended period of time.

Consider signing up for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training that is offered through MOFD. This training provides you with information and training that can be used to assist during emergencies and disasters in our Town. For more information, please contact MOFD at 925-258-4599.

Please report any fires or suspicious activity immediately via 9-1-1 or to Dispatch at 925-284-5010.. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact MPD at 925-888-7055 or MOFD at 925-258-4599.

Thank you for helping us to keep Moraga a safe community.
