San Leandro resident charged in attempt murder case

A San Leandro man has been charged with attempted murder following a late-night fight outside a local convenience store. Around 10:30 p.m. on October 2nd, 2017, 34-year old Jermonta Cummings engaged in a fist-fight with another man outside the Quick Stop market located at 206 Marina Blvd. in San Leandro.

During the fist-fight, Cummings produced a knife and began stabbing and slashing the victim multiple times. Even as the victim lay wounded, Cummings continued to attack the victim with the knife. Cummings then fled the scene before police arrival.

The victim sustained serious injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. San Leandro Police Detectives responded to the incident and began investigating. Detectives found that the entire incident had been captured on store surveillance cameras. Within a short amount of time, investigators were able to identify the suspect and his location of residence.

On October 4th, 2017, Cummings was located and arrested by SLPD detectives at his home. Evidence from the crime scene was also located and secured. "Due to the diligent work of our detectives, we were able to quickly identify the suspect and bring him to justice," said San Leandro Police Lt. Isaac Benabou.

On October 6th, 2017, the case against Cummings was presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's office. Cummings has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated mayhem. Cummings is being held without bail at Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
