Armed, Distraught Man Surrenders After Stand-off in Rancho Palos Verdes

Lomita Sheriff’s deputies have taken a man into custody after he forced his way into his parent’s home, armed himself with a handgun, and fired several shots.

Shortly before 6:00 am this morning, deputies responded to a 911 call of a disturbance in the 6400 block of Sealpoint Court.  They learned the suspect, identified as Paul David Carriere, 36 years old, had unexpectedly arrived at his parent’s home and obtained a handgun.  He began firing shots at some point, and family members inside the home were able to safely escape.  Carriere fled the home via a rear window.  He was located by deputies in the 6500 block of Seacove Drive, after several calls were received regarding a man with a gun.  He was spotted by a Sheriff’s helicopter in the rear yard of a home, pointing a handgun at his temple.

Several nearby homes were evacuated while a Sheriff’s Department Special Weapons Team and Crisis Negotiation Team moved in.  Carrier surrendered after more than four hours, when flash bang grenades were deployed.  He placed the gun on the ground and was taken into custody by SWAT team members.  Carriere is being booked at Lomita Sheriff’s Station on multiple charges, including burglary, discharging a firearm in a negligent manner, and weapons violations.

No one was injured during the incident, and displaced residents have returned to their homes.
