Suspect Apprehended after Fleeing

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke reports that his office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was traveling 96 miles per hour on Decatur Rd near Kelsey Lake Street in Penn Township, Cass County Michigan, on 09/20/2017 at 5:52pm. The Deputy reported that the driver of the vehicle fled on foot during the traffic stop. Cass County K9 Faust and Handler Deptuy Nevins responded to the location and began to track the suspect. The K9 Unit tracked the suspect for 3.4 miles in thick wooded area and corn fields. The K9 Unit decided to cancel the track due to the safety of the K9 for heat exhaustion. A short time later the suspect was located by Deputies near the intersection of Okeefe Road and Shurte Street just north of Cassopolis, Michigan. The 24 year old Elkhart man was treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration at Dowagiac Lee Memorial Hospital and was then transport to the Cass County Jail for his charges of Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting a Police Officer, Possession of a Firearm and Driving with no operators license.
