DUI Checkpoint Scheduled for this Wednesday, 9/20/17.

The San Mateo Police Department will be conducting a DUI Checkpoint this Wednesday, September 20, 2017 from 6:30pm-1:30am on 4th Ave., between S. Grant St. and S. Humboldt St. in an effort to maintain our commitment to safer San Mateo roadways.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints and the education of the public that goes along with them are proven resources in combating the number of people killed and/or injured in alcohol or drug related crashes.  DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording us the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence, while taking into consideration the safety of the officers and the public.  Funding for this checkpoint is provided by OTS, through NHTSA.

Officers will momentarily delay motorists to look for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairments.  When possible, specially trained officers will be able to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving.  Drugs which may impair driving include illegal narcotics, both prescription and over-the-counter medications, and marijuana.

Do not ever hesitate to report a drunk/drugged driver on the road.  Report them immediately to 9-1-1.  Some signs to look for include acceleration/deceleration, weaving, erratic braking, drifting, striking or near striking of objects, curbs, or other vehicles...

With your help, we can combat this dangerous crime together and save lives.  With more than 900 people a year killed in DUI accidents, our mission to save lives continues, carrying on Statewide efforts to stop this tragic epidemic.
