Subject arrested after firing multiple gunshots when contacted by officers.

On Wednesday, September 13th at approximately 11:40 pm, the Campbell Police Department received a report of a prowler in the 700 block of Cypress Lane. The initial information indicated that there were explosions outside the residence.

Campbell officers responded and located a subject in the side yard of a residence near the sound wall to Highway 17. The subject ran from officers, jumping a fence into the backyard of a home. Immediately after jumping the fence, officers heard gunshots.

No officers were shot, however, 8-12 gunshots continued for the next 10-15 minutes while a perimeter was established. The California Highway Patrol closed southbound Highway 17 from Hamilton Avenue to San Tomas Expressway. CHP Officers observed a subject matching the description lying face down near Los Gatos Creek.

The subject was eventually taken in to custody and positively identified by officers and the initial reporting party. A gun and spent shell casings were located in the area where the subject was taken in to custody.

Our search of the area has concluded and the shelter in place for residents in the area has been lifted. At this time, it is believed that there was only one suspect and he will be booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

The safe conclusion of this critical incident was due in large part to the assistance of our neighboring law enforcement agencies. We would like to thank the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department, the Los Gatos Police Department, the San Jose Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
